Abstract

Background and Aims: Patient rights awareness are fundamental to ethical healthcare, yet compliance levels vary significantly across medical departments, including radiology. The present study aims to evaluate the awareness of patients regarding their rights and the observance of patients' rights from the perspectives of patients and staff in radiology departments of hospitals affiliated to Kashan University of Medical Sciences (Kashan, Iran).
Methods: The present study is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in 2017. A total of 39 radiology department staff and 144 patients were selected based on census and random quota sampling, respectively. The data were collected using 4 questionnaires —two on awareness of the patients' rights charter and two on observance of patients' rights— tailored for staff and patients. The data were analyzed by descriptive and analytical statistics.
Results: The awareness of patients and staff regarding the patients' rights charter was 62.67±1.91% and 37.96±2.65%, respectively. A significant correlation was found between patients' level of awareness and their economic status (p<0.05) and education level (p<0.05). The overall observance of all the evaluated items, measured on a 5-point Likert scale, was 3.04±0.28 (60.8%) from the patients' point of view and 4.00±0.22 (80.0%) from the staff's point of view.
Conclusion: The results show that awareness of patients' rights was at a moderate level for both groups; however, a striking finding was that staff awareness was significantly lower than patient awareness. Furthermore, the level of observance of patients' rights was evaluated to be low from the patients' point of view and moderate from the staff's point of view.
